There is no single option that is best for everyone: the right choice depends on how many people travel, how often you will use it, how much comfort you want and, above all, what your trips will really look like

Campervan, caravan or motorhome: quick differences

Appearance

Camper

Caravan

Motorhome

Mobility

Very high

Medium

High

Interior space

Medium

High

High

Price of purchase

Medium / high

Low / medium

High

It needs a separate car

No

Yes

No

Easy parking

High

Lower it when it is engaged

Medium / high

Comfort on long journeys

Medium / high

Registration once installed

High

When to choose a campervan?

A camper van makes sense if you place a lot of importance on mobility. You can use it practically like a normal vehicle, enter towns and cities more easily and change destinations with little preparation.
It also tends to fit particularly well with couples or travellers who do multi-stop road trips and spend relatively little time inside the vehicle during the day.
Its main drawback is evident: space. Kitchen, bathroom, storage and resting area have to coexist in just a few square metres. The more compact the campervan, the more important it is to decide which comforts are truly essential.

When to choose a caravan?

The caravan is usually the option that offers more space for less money. For the same budget, it is common to find more spacious layouts, fixed beds, a full kitchen and more comfortable seating areas than in a campervan.
It makes especially good sense if your way of travelling consists of arriving at a campsite or a designated area, setting up for several days and then using the car to get around the local area. Once unhitched, you retain all the mobility of a regular car while your “home” remains set up.
The main disadvantage appears precisely during journeys. Towing a caravan demands more attention, limits speed, complicates certain manoeuvres and makes it necessary to check that the towing vehicle can pull it legally and safely.
You also have to think about where to store it when it's not in use. If you don't have a plot of land, a garage or private space, annual parking can become another fixed cost.

When to choose a motorhome?

The motorhome seeks a different balance: it offers much of the comfort of a caravan without the need to tow a trailer. Living quarters and vehicle form a single unit, making arriving, parking and continuing the journey much simpler. It is particularly attractive for families, long trips and people who value having a bathroom, kitchen, storage and beds with fewer daily conversions. Compared to a campervan, you will typically have more space and comfort, but also a larger vehicle. Parking in certain towns, cities or tourist areas can be more difficult and, once set up in a spot, any journey means moving the entire motorhome unless you have bicycles, a motorbike or another auxiliary means of transport. Furthermore, it is usually the alternative with the highest initial outlay of the three, so it is worth assessing how much it will actually be used before buying.

Which is cheaper: campervan, caravan or motorhome?

If we look solely at the purchase price, the caravan usually starts with an advantage. It allows access to quite a lot of living space without having to buy a whole vehicle, provided you already have a suitable car to tow it.
The campervan usually sits at an intermediate point. There can be enormous differences between a simple converted van and a fully equipped panel van, but in general you are paying for both the vehicle and the living space at the same time.
The motorhome usually requires the highest initial outlay, especially for new models or those with a good level of equipment.
However, the purchase price should not be the only factor. Before deciding, it is also worth considering the total cost of ownership.

Safe

Vehicle tax

Mechanical maintenance

Tyres

Gas installation servicing

Batteries and electrical system

Repairs to housing elements

Fuel consumption

ITV

Parking or livery when not in use

Depreciation

A cheap caravan can stop being so if you need to change your car in order to tow it. Likewise, a more expensive campervan can be worth it for someone who also uses it as their everyday vehicle and avoids maintaining a second car.

That is why at Rumbante we prefer to talk about total cost of ownership rather than simply “which one costs less”.

If after considering your options you are leaning towards a used campervan, check out our our used camper buying checklist. before deciding.

Which is better for a couple?

For a couple that travels frequently and changes destination a lot, a campervan is usually one of the most balanced options. It is easy to handle, allows for spontaneous routes, and is simpler to park and drive than a large motorhome. If comfort is the priority and longer trips are planned, a motorhome can be more pleasant, especially if having a full bathroom, a fixed bed or more interior space is important. The caravan fits particularly well with couples who enjoy setting up camp for several days at the same campsite and then using the car to explore the surrounding area.

Rather than the number of travellers, the key question would be: are you going to be moving around almost every day, or do you prefer to establish a base for several days?.

And for travelling with children?

When three, four or more people are travelling, space starts to play a much bigger role in the decision.
A motorhome normally offers greater storage capacity, distinct zones and layouts designed for families. Bunk beds, drop-down beds and a convertible dining area make it possible to accommodate several people without having to dismantle half the vehicle every night.
The caravan can also be an excellent solution for families and usually offers plenty of interior space for the budget available. Furthermore, once set up, the car is free for trips, shopping or getting around.
A family campervan can work perfectly well, but it is worth realistically analysing where everyone will sleep, how much luggage will be taken and what living together will be like when it is cold, raining or everyone has to stay inside for several hours.

A layout that seems massive during a ten-minute visit can feel very different after a week travelling with four people.

What to choose based on your travel style

If you're mainly looking for...

I would probably look first…

Maximum mobility

Camper

More space for less money

Caravan

Comfort on long journeys

Motorhome

Staying for several days and exploring the area by car

Caravan

Improvising and changing destination a lot

Camper

Travelling as a family with quite a lot of luggage

Motorhome or caravan

This does not mean that one of the three options is automatically correct. It serves solely to know where to start looking.

Before you buy, ask yourself these 7 questions

How many people usually travel?

How many nights a year do you think you'll actually use it?

Will you change destination almost every day or stay several days in each place?

Do you need a full bathroom and shower?

Where will you keep the vehicle when you are not using it?

Do you need to use it as a daily driver too?

What budget can you afford not only to buy it, but also to maintain it?

If you still aren't clear on these answers, it's probably too early to decide which vehicle to buy.

Try before you buy

If it is your first experience with this type of vehicle, renting before buying can save you a very expensive mistake.
A week of travelling lets you discover things that hardly ever appear on a technical specification sheet: whether you miss having more space, if you find converting the bed uncomfortable, if a motorhome feels too big for you, whether you actually use the washroom or if you prefer the freedom of a smaller campervan.
It may even be interesting to try two different formats before deciding. The rental cost will be small compared to buying a vehicle that six months later you discover doesn't suit your way of travelling.

So, campervan, caravan or motorhome?

There is no outright winner.
Choose a campervan if you prioritise mobility, spontaneity and ease of driving.
Choose a caravan if you are looking for a lot of space for your budget, are going to stay several days in each destination and want to have the car available once you are settled.
Choose motorhome if you particularly value comfort, space and autonomy for long journeys.
The right decision is not to buy the biggest or the most expensive vehicle. It is to choose the one that fits the way you are actually going to travel.

Do you have a clearer idea of which format interests you now?
